In October 2019, I started GOLDSTEIN AND GASOL, an exploration of Lakers fandom, L.A. history, and the 2019-2020 Lakers. Inspired by Julie & Julia, Goldstein and Gasol is a collection of 82 recipes from the 1985 World Champion Los Angeles Lakers Are Cookin’ Family Cookbook along with 82 essays about the wide range of Showtime-era Angelenos who contributed to this book.

I created it because I knew the Lakers’ acquisition of Anthony Davis would make the 2019-2020 season the most consequential Lakers season in a decade. What I didn’t know was that Kobe Bryant would die in a horrific helicopter accident, that an NBA player contracting Covid-19 would be the event that caused America to shut down, that the NBA Playoffs would take place in a “bubble” within Orlando’s Wide World of Disney Sports Complex, that the NBA players would call an unprecedented wildcat strike while in the bubble, or that the Lakers would win their first title in a decade.
